Care and Maintenance
The following information
is provided to answer frequently asked questions about wood care and maintenance.
Please read this information carefully. If you have any additional questions,
please call or e-mail us.
Preventive Care
- Never use abrasive cleaners,
scouring powder, or steel wool. Please refer to Regular
Maintenance on how to clean a wood floor.
- Place a floor mat or
throw rug at outside doorways.
- Place a mat in front
of the kitchen sink.
- Never wet-mop a wood
floor. Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood, and leave a discoloring
residue.
- Wipe up food and liquid
spills immediately with preferably a dry towel or you may use a slightly dampened
towel.
- Always make sure furniture
legs have large surface, non-staining floor protectors. When moving heavy
furniture, completely pick up and carry the furniture to its new location.
- Cleats, sport shoes,
or high heels can dent the floor's surface.
Regular
Maintenance
- Regular dust mopping
or vacuuming is an essential part of wood floor care. A good quality dust
mop or vacuum head is the most effective tool for cleaning dust and dirt off
the floor. Dust or vacuum as necessary to keep grit off the floor.
- For general cleaning,
we carry Bona™ Swedish Formula™ Hardwood Floor Cleaner. It is
a water-based, environmentally responsible cleaner specifically formulated
to clean all polyurethane finished wood floors or factory prefinished no-wax
floors. With Bona Swedish Formula™ Hardwood Floor Cleaner, you'll quickly
wipe out red wine, dried spaghetti sauce, mustard, ketchup, heel scuffs, and
other potential hazards. Unlike other all-purpose cleaners or oil-soaps, Bona™
Swedish Formula™ Hardwood Floor Cleaner is designed to tackle all types
of stains without dulling your floor finish or leaving any oily residue which
may cause an adverse effect on a recoat of finish at a later date. Bona™
Swedish Formula™ Hardwood Floor Cleaner is ready to use straight from
the bottle, and since mixing isn't required, it's never too strong or too
weak. Simply spray the solution directly onto a terrycloth towel or mophead
and then apply to floor.
Carpet
Care and Maintenance
The following information
is provided to answer frequently asked questions about carpet installations
and maintenance. Please read this information carefully. If you have any additional
questions, please call or e-mail us.
Immediately After
Installation
Some shedding is common
in new carpet. The loose fibers are easily removed through regular vacuuming.
This condition will diminish after a few weeks or months depending on vacuum
frequency. If carpet shows snags or sprouts, clip them with scissors. Do not
pull them.
Preventive Care
- Vacuum regularly. If
you can, vacuum high-traffic areas two or three times a week, and vacuum other
areas weekly.
- Move heavy furniture
occasionally to avoid excessive pile crushing.
- Avoid prolonged periods
of direct sunlight.
- Do not use chairs or
appliances with wheels or rollers that are moved over the carpet unless you
place a rubber mat under them.
Regular Maintenance
- Vacuum regularly to keep
soil from becoming embedded in carpet's pile. Vacuuming is the best thing
you can do to extend the useful good-looking life of your carpet.
- Spot clean the carpet
as long as possible to forestall an overall carpet cleaning. Blot liquid spills
quickly with a clean cloth or towel. Repeat as necessary before using a detergent
or other cleaning solution.

Immediately After
Installation
- Keep traffic light during
the first 24 hours so adhesive can dry properly. If floor has been seamed,
avoid stepping on the seam sealer for 24 hours so it can dry undisturbed.
- Avoid scrubbing or washing
the floor for at least three days after installation. Spot clean the floor,
avoiding all seams. Clean any adhesive residue with a clean white cloth dampened
with mineral spirits.
- Furniture should not
be placed on the floor until the adhesive has had adequate time to dry (at
least 24 hours).
- Always move heavy furniture
and appliances with care to avoid gouging or tearing the floors.
Preventive Care
- Always make sure furniture
legs have large surface, non-staining floor protectors.
- Place mats at outside
entrances to prevent dirt, grit, and soil from being tracked onto your floor.
Use 100% latex-backed mats, because some rubber-backed mats or carpets may
permanently stain your floor.
Regular Maintenance
- Sweep or vacuum regularly
to remove dirt and grit that can abrade, dull or scratch your new floor. Do
not use a vacuum with a beater brush, because it may damage the floor's surface.
- Occasional mopping with
a resilient floor cleaner (follow directions closely). Avoid one-step "mop
and polish" products, dish washing liquids, and oil-based cleaners. Also avoid
cleaners that contain abrasives or solvents which may permanently damage your
floor.
